OK, I've let the original poll run for a couple of days and the results are largely in line with my expectations. My suspicions were that the high volumes of posts on helmet threads are partially driven by feelings of guilt, envy, fear by many of the posters, but that most of the posters are too embarrassed to admit this. So far in the poll no-one has admitted that this is a reason why they post (which is what I expected). In order to test my hypothesis further I ask you to suggest why you think the main reasons for so many people posting on helmet threads are. You can select as many options as you think are generally applicable.

I voted for the last one but still feel you haven't given me the right options - I wear a helmet most but not all of the time and get comments from others for turning up to pick my son up whilst not wearing it sometimes but they don't bother me. So I feel that definitely excludes the first two. I have various irrational fears but actually a car accident seems minor in comparison. I'm not out to simply wind someone up or just to tell them what to do. I'm possibly not keen on being told what to do but tend to be someone who hates rule breaking.

For me there isn't any conclusive evidence that the helmet works at the top speeds I'm travelling at (normally fairly slow on the flat but I did 30 mph downhill today). Can anyone show me the tests where they have proved it works at that speed. At low speeds I have pretty good control of my bike (well I like to think so). And where are the tests for helmet/car crashes?

And if they are going to sell helmets can someone make the minimum specification better - have you ever tried to adjust the cheapest ones to fit properly.
