a good number of riders don't 'pay' to do this ride - I've done it about 7 times and it's well known that many don't pay but still ride. I have to say that the increase in price has far exceeded inflation over the last 10 years with about a 10% increase year-on-year - it's a good large event though with a nice atmosphere at the finish most years (helped by free Adnams)

I'm giving up 'sportives' for 2015 - the price is just getting silly and the high proportion of newbie riders often makes crashing too likely for my liking!

I've only ever done two Sportives. The Quattro and the Gorilla Ride. I do a couple of Charity rides a year, usually the BHF London - Brighton (now £35!) and in the past, the Lymphoma and Leukaemia London rides to do my bit for the charities.
Still, it's an enjoyable day or two out with the chaps that includes much beer in the evening.
There's nothing to stop anyone 'ghost' riding though as they are ridden on open public roads.
