North York Moors and back from York

In a couple of weeks time I'm bunking off work, jumping on the train to York and going for a day out on the road with some mates.

I think it would be nice to ride out to the north york moors and back, but as I've never been before, does anyone have any route recommendations? Caf recommendations would also be most welcome.

B1363 up to Helmsley. I think Sutton on the Forest onwards is really nice.

Which side of the park are you going to?

How far do want go? on road? what sort of difficulty?

couple of suggestions, with good cafe places in red:

York - new earswick - flaxton - bulmer - castle howard - slingsby - kirby moorside - fadmoor - cockayne - helmsley - rievaulx - scawton - kilburn - coxwold - crayke - york; hilly 90ish miles

York - new earswick - flaxton - bulmer - castle howard - amotherby - kirby moorside - castleton - danby - lastingham - hutton le hole kirby moorside - york 90ish, hilly

A map will enable you to vary these to suit distance e.g from fadmoor you can cut across to hutton le hole, detour round farndale and include church houses (20%). From Kirby moorside follow to lastingham then rosedale then the infamous chimney (30%). Or you can stay less hilly, but still bumpy by going slingsby - harome - hovingham - amotherby - kilburn etc.

Also check out Ryedale Rumble route if you're particularly masochistic.

Whatever - you'll have a good day.

If you're not familiar with Yorkshire - note that any bit of road called 'Bank' (Blakey Bank, Sutton Bank) is bloody steep!

My knowledge of the North York moors, is that they have the steepest gradients on the West side (Northallerton) most of which I would not tackle myself at present, untill I get a compact and loose a bit more weight, The South side (York) is more manageable with longer shallow climbs. Near Whitby, Egton Bridge area I found 30% gradients which I have to walk. I know very little of the North side so cannot comment on it apart from the Esk Valley which has some steep climbs both side of it.

As for traversing the moors, most roads run North to South across them, and from the West to the East there is no road that I can see you can take direct from one side to the other unless you dog leg constantly North to South from one side to the other.

Bear in mind also, at this time of the year it could get cold on top of the hills so be prepared for it.

My last foray over them through the middle, 60 miles left me worn out when I got to Whitby, as it is quiet hard going, and I still had to return back over them. 120 miles in nine hours

Oddly enough I was looking at the map myself today for another ride out onto the moors before the days get shorter. Apart from that it is a great place to cycle over.

I have details of the Tour of North Yorks Moors 200km audax if that would help. It's in a box somewhere, never got round to doing it yet....sounds a good route.

If you are riding out from York, my recommendation would be the ballon tree at Gate Helmsley for a cafe stop. Miles away from North Yorks moors, but best cake stop i've ever had

If you can, try fitting-in Lockton to Levisham.

Only a mile or so apart, but what a down-then-up mile...:ohmy::ohmy:

(and you can carry on past Levisham Station on through the forest road to Cropton - it's signposted from Levisham as 'Forest Drive' but then painted-over on the signs, although you can still read it sort-of : just rough crumbly breaking-up tar and some well graded gravel, but perfectly doable on roadbike or MTB with slicks. This is a good route from Pickering to Helmsley avoiding A170)

There's a nice cafe in Rosedale Abbey. I think it starts to close around this time of year though. Also quite liked one in Danby.
