It is relatively flat but not always. They say that the land on the northern coast of France is similar to where it would join to the UK. The South Downs is hilly to me - not big but adds up.

I am looking at a tour inland in Normandy and there is a range of hills there.

Your best bet is to have a look at where you want to go in Google Earth in the tilt mode, or perhaps Google maps with the terrain view. Compare with somewhere you know.

I can tell you that northern France is definitely not flat as we went on a club weekend from Calais to Montreal and back along the coast road through Boulogne and the total was 96 miles at 3700ft of climbing.

It also depends where you're going.

The bit around Calais, Flanders, Lille is indeed flat.

The bits around the Seine valley (le Havre into Paris) are a bit lumpier, but very cycleable if you stick to the northern bank. There are also some lovely spots, far more scenic than you'd expect to find thereabouts on that route.

Cool thanks. We live in portsmouth and my friend had a bright idea of camping over France!!!!!!! So I said why not just go to the new forest about 30 to 40 miles away

It's not flat, bad areas are swiss normandy region, which is named swiss for a reason, it is incredibly hilly.

I have cycled a lot in northern france, plenty of enjoyable cyle rides, if you need excellent cycle path maps for free, try the nearest tourist office on your trip, they provide them free in Normandy written in english.
This is the pdf of what the tourist office will give you
http://www.mancheran...manche-2009.pdf
It shows all the cycle routes in Normandy.
Also you can get some rock bottom prices if you book the ferry from Portsmouth in advance, i nearly always travel with my bike on the ferry.
Ld lines have given me great service, they had a 5 day ticket where you can visit france for 5 days,i missed the ferry on the 5 th day and they gave me a ticket for day 6 for free to get home.

I also wild camp in northern france, it isn't too hard to find a place.Or if you prefer camp sites, they cost 4 euros upwards.
Here was one of my wild camping spots.
