Being a big fan of dolphins and whales I am currently attempting a boycot (along with a small number of others who care) of Japanese goods. Apart from Campagnolo, Stronglight and Mavic, does anyone know of any other manufacturers that are not Japanese part Japanese owned?

SRAM are American as far as I recall. So are Cane Creek

Depends on the parts you want...

There are lots of niche manufactures. Hope do discs, rims, hubs and headsets, USE do bars, chainrings etc.

There are also European gear manufacturers but they tend to be specialists like Rohloff and Schlumpf

It is possible to totally equip bikes with European parts ( I have 6 that I have done so) but there is a premium

I would bet good cake that most of the non jap suppliers source many component parts from Japan and china.
Never going to win that one.
+1, but congrats and good luck on taking a stance, but to give an example I work in the motor industry, and after the tsunami in Japan our manufacturer had to scrap certain paint colours as the dyes for producing the paint came from, you guessed it, Japan. It also halted production of one particular engine, and one gearbox due to component supply. Guess you'd have thought it safe to buy a European car in avoiding Japanese products eh?

+2. Shimano e.g. is a public company so anybody can buy its shares i.e. essentially its ownership is global. Campag/Sram while private will undoubtedly have financial arrangements of all sorts in different countries, such instruments might well in turn be syndicated/collateralised into various institutions including Japanese. Further, OP being in Australia I would hazard to guess Oz has to be one of the biggest suppliers of all sorts of stuff consumed in Japan. Where do you start, and where do you stop, and are there better/clearer ways to lobby?

I admire your stance but globalization shoots it in the foot a bit. You might find that people in our country have pension portfolios that could well include Shimano and other Japanese institutions.

What the others said

Japan might like to munch on dolphin but then the other big manufacturer, China, who are an almost unavoidable part of modern cycling also supply weapons to the regime in Zimbabwae, some parts quite possibly CNC machined in the same factories in some cases.

Where does it end?

Could not have put it better myself.

Thank's everyone for the suggestions. You have given me a few more manufacturers to look at.
I appreciate the fact that the market is global and am always keen to use it to my own advantage, but if nobody does anything to try and change things, what hope is there. I know my small protest is insignificant but hopefully it may eventually (although unlikely) rub off on a few others and have some impact.
