The front brake on my steel tourer is noisy. I can wake up entire villages on night rides ^_^

Have tried new pads, Salmon Koolstops. No real improvement.

Tried toeing the pads in first a little then a lot, no real improvement.

Considering putting rubber washers where they bolt onto the steel fork to try and soak up the vibration. Not heard of anyone else doing this , this is just a plan I have dreamt up but not tried yet.

Anyone had any success at fixing this annoyance?

On the plus side its far more effective than ringing a bell though ^_^

Assuming you have tried all these, once I had a set of ceramic pads for ceramic rims that would stop squealing only when I set them up toe-out...

The other thing is you said the front squeals. If the rear doesn't then swapping the pads will help you identify whether it is the pads or the brake/rim.

Thanks for the reply.

I think I have tried most of the suggestions in the link .

Never tried "toe out" though. willing to try anything once so will have a play with it again later.

I have Tektro Oryx brakes on my Dawes Horizon. I've never completely stopped them squealing.

The best pads I've used for silencing them were Swisstops (sort of snot green colour), but they're normally quite pricey and they only lasted about 1000 miles. They were very good at stopping me in all weathers though. The Kool Stop dual compound ones are almost as good, and are what I'll buy again when I've used the set of Salmons I'm on at present. The Salmons won't go completely quiet even with ridiculous toe-in.

The Salmons are as good as the Swisstops for all weather stopping and the dual compound ones aren't far behind, but the Salmons are noisier.

The original pads didn't squeal much, neither did they stop much either.

I periodically threaten to replace the cantilever brakes with dual pivot caliper ones, and if I trusted the adaptor devices I'd fit linear pull (V) brakes.

Thanks for all the replies.

Have cleaned the pads and rims and adjusted the toe in again by putting a thick cable tie between rim and pad and squeezing up tight then doing up the locking screw tightly. I think in the past I havent done the bolt up tightly enough and the pad has gone back to the flat position again. Also I wonder if too much toe in is as bad as not enough.

The horrendous screach is now down to an acceptable squeal. Fingers crossed it will stay like this for a while.

3 years on and I finally fixed the screeching front brake.^_^^_^
over the 3 years I must have tried about a dozen different brake block cartridge inserts with varying lack of success. swissstop Coolstop and a variety of others all screeched toeing in helped a bit but not much.

Was in Tredz Cardiff today and spoke to the mechanic who despite being obviously busy took the time to speak to me and recommended binning the complete brake pad holder and buy a basic jagwire mtb rubber brake block ,the type with the bolt bonded direct to the brake block not the type with cartridge inserts.

Instant result. No screeching at all and braking is good as well. cost about a fiver ^_^^_^^_^

I use the Jagwire inserts for my cantis, and they work well with no screeching, seen to be pretty kind to rims too:smile:
