Hello,
when pedalling on my road bike there is a very noticeable sound that sounds like splitting/splinting coming from the BB area which seems to increase when I'm pedalling harder, e.g. out of the saddle going up inclines. I've double-checked the pedal tightness, which seems fine, so I'm not sure what it could be. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Thanks.

Mine does it when I put more pressure on because the axle in the BB moves very slightly from side to side - it's jammed in too tight for me to adjust it (old school BB, none of your modern nonsense) and I guess the new bearings are slightly smaller than the old, or it came out a little bit when it felt like it didn't move at all. Anyway - try moving the axle from side to side - I suppose as bearings wear you will get the same thing.

I think it may be the Speedplays. Brainwave - why don't I swap the pedals for the basic ones I've got and if there's no noise, well, it's pedal stripping time. Maybe.

Last time it happened to me I changed the cartridge bottom bracket.
Seems it was to no avail that time as I ended up also having to change a pedal.

Anyway this time the noise was loud enough to seem dangerous.
Likely it was caused by water ingress during the flash floods on my Bedale ride. Luckily the spare that came from my prior futile change fixed it.

So light clicking it is likely pedals, anything loud it should be the bottom bracket.

I had creaking on my Defy 1 and was certain it was BB, despite being relatively new. Turned out to be the front mech hanger not being as tight as it should. Noises tend to always point at the BB, but not so often end up being the BB.

Chainrings, headset/stem, any of these can also sound like a BB also grease cleats if you use them. I have done all the above, new BB pedals greased the lot and still get a creak from time to time.

If it's a press fit bottom bracket they are renowned to develop creaking after a while, wouldn't be too much of an issue but just damn annoying.

I had a similar issue with a new bike, worked it out to be the pedals, bought some grease and lubed them up, the sound went

Yup same. Whip pedals off, grease threads, put em back. Worth trying that 1st

Yup, same here. New bike, horrible click-click after a while with every revolution of the crank/pedals. Greased pedal threads and noise disappeared after refitting them to the crank arms. Job done!!
