No bikes is friendliest!

According to a Virgin Money survey, the most bike friendly place would be somewhere with no bikes.

In their survey of the UK's most cycle friendly towns and cities they placed Cambridge 60th and London 56th with the winner being Plymouth, a city with one of the lowest cycling levels in the country, followed by Norwich, Bristol, St Helens, Huddersfield, Glasgow, Dudley, Ipswich, Cardiff and Walsall.

Why did Cambridge and London fare so badly? Because they had the highest number of accidents and cycle thefts. No thought given by the Virgin Money men as to why that might be or assessing the popularity of cycling.

If that is the standard of maths and analysis at Virgin Money, then watch out for another banking crisis!

Yes, my towns in there because i've only ever seen a handful of cyclists, it really is a pointless survey.

I was pleased Bristol was near the top until I saw who had beaten them and then realised that it was based on some weird weighting of the various factors.

I work for Virgin Money, and cycle with Graeme, and he was as confused as anyone about the survey results. Incidentally, at the presentation of the findings, the representative from Cambridge was a bit miffed.

The only reason the VM name is anywhere near that survey is as part of the promotional activity for the Cyclone. A bit of a failure really!

I live in Plymouth and encounter about 4 cycles on my 3.5 mile commute. There are loads of bus lanes which may have helped boost the score, but as you say, the number of cyclists per capita has clearly not been factored in. Similarly, there are always plenty of places to lock your bike up in town, but again that is becasue no-one cycles. When I look at London and Oxford streets and see all of those bikes it makes me glad I have the bus lanes and cycle lanes to myself.
