This is how I do it:

1 = put tyre on rim (one side only).
2 = insert partially inflated tube into tyre (only a little air is required) - make sure valve is through valve hole. Then put the tube in the tyre, going around the wheel.
3 = put other side of tyre on rim.
4 = pump up the inner tube until squishy (that's a technical term), but so you can sqeeze the tyre sides, exposing the inner side of the rim.
5 = go round the tyre squeezing one wall of the tyre at a time (if you can see the inner tube, it's trapped between the tyre wall and the rim. Repeat on the other side.
6 = pump up to full pressure.

Hope this helps!

You will not be the only one, first put just a little air into the tube, just enough to make it round and stop it lying flat on the rim. Next, start easing the tyre on to the rim furthest away from the valve using your thumbs. Finish at the valve and by physically pushing the valve away from the rim [towards the tyre] it lessens the chances of nipping the tube. Most tyres, if seated properly as you work your way round towards the valve, will be doable with your thumbs but don't worry if you have to use levers for the last 10 cm or so as some tyres are notoriously difficult to get on like the Schwalbe Marathons. Good luck.
