Nightmare: Lyra Disc Brakes and Sora STI levers

My Whyte Kings Cross has Lyra disc brakes and Sora levers, and some cross levers too; since new the brakes have been really shoddy, especially at the front. I bought the bike with disc brakes with the hope of consistent and predictable braking but have found that they are poor in dry conditions and worse in wet, and just plain noisy when there is any damp in the air, at all.

When I first got the bike I put the odd braking down to me needing to adjust to a new hand position as I hadn't used STI levers before. However, I soon discovered that there were times that no matter how hard I squeezed, with the pads jammed hard against the disc the bike was just failing to slow and stop properly - the stopping distance with my other bike with caliper brakes is well under half or even a third of this one at similar speeds. Even after the bikes first service when all cables were nice and tight with no play, the brakes didn't really perform properly.

Have I been the victim of some aweful experiment in the introduction of disc brakes to Cyclo Cross bikes or is there hope that this setup can actually function properly? The bike is currently in my shed, unrideable as the front brake has given up on me totally after trying to adjust it myself - there is a 1/2' of play in the cable and casing near the cross levers that i just can't eliminate, and the caliper jams if I try and pull the cable through too firmly....

I'm thinking of getting the bike properly serviced soon, but don't feel too confident this will sort the braking out though.

Is this a warranty or hardware compatibility issue? Anyone else had a similar problem?

What rotors do you have?
The original genesis day01 alfine had lyra callipers but shimano rotors. The rotors where narrower than the lyra rotors and as such caused issues under heavy breaking.

If they were like that from new then why not take it back for a look-see?
The discs on my Tricross squeal a lot in the damp, but they work.

I have the Charing Cross version with avid BB5 and, now I have set them up properly, they work fine. I test rode the Kings Cross with lyra brakes and I did not experience any problems with them for that short ride. So I assume they can be set up properly. I recommend trying to get the bike shop to set them up properly or, if that doesn't work, changing out for BB5 or better still BB7.

I have Avid BB7 and they are great, good braking wet or dry. They can be a bit noisy in the wet, but no braking issues.

Having got my brakes serviced today there is a definite improvement but still a distinct lack of anything close to the stopping power I would expect from disc brakes (and a rubbing noise if I lean the bike to the right!). The generic mechanical disc brakes on my Carrera Subway out perform these ones in all conditions, which is a real let down.

Can anyone recommend anywhere that has a good price on BB5's or 7's? Would getting rid of the cross levers make any difference (I hardly use them)?

Here for rides.
BB7 Sora STI and a cane creek cross top for the front only on my tourer. Works a treat. Doesn't work quite as well as pre-cross top install but still way more than adequate.
