As Skip predicted the other day, it has just been announced that Nicole Cooke will sign for top German team, Equipe Nürnberger Versicherung (or Skyter-Shipping as it will be known next year). So she'll be in with Amber Neben and Trixi Worrack amongst many others so finally we will be able to see what Cooke can do as part of a proper strong team...

Exciting indeed, although Cooke's description of the squad as "the strongest international team" is probably a touch more hyperbole than reality (although in terms of a GC squad they are fairly close to Columbia, albeit still well behind Cervélo).

So the question for me is, given that at the moment the Boucle isn't on the UCI calendar, and in any case Nürnberger haven't ridden it since 2003... will she ride the Giro? Imagine a Cooke-Neben two pronged attack for Skyter with Worrack at their side, against the Häusler-Pooley-Soeder-Ryan Cervélo machine counting on Düster, Armitstead and Laws, with Columbia having the choices of Arndt and Abbott backed up by Villumsen and Keller with Stevens as their wildcard...

...and those other teams, too.

I think Cooke could really use another Giro win to cement her place as one of the great stage-race riders, since her Boucle wins, though very impressive, were in fairly short races against talented but depleted fields. The Giro should be what it's all about.

That should be good news, now she can concentrate on her riding and not worry about runnig a team etc. Let's hope she will get some good results next season!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By the way...
Cycling News said:
The 26-year-old had a brilliant 2008 season, in which she won both the Olympic title and road World Championships, but her 2009 season saw only a few wins: the British Championships, a stage and the overall of the Giro del Trentino and two stages of the Lurreta-Emakumeen Bira. It was a far cry from the usual results of the two-time World Cup overall winner, who has been one of the most successful women cyclists of all time.
In her awful terrible rubbish fruitless waste of a season that has been 2009, there are still only nine riders who have scored more UCI-ranked victories than Cooke this season.

True - but by what she's capable of, it was disappointing. She's the kind of rider who could just dominate, if she had the backing...
