As I've only recently started cycling and I estimated that I could spend a fortune on bits and pieces, if I really thought about it. So I have got family to do a couple of bits for me, like a nice stainless steel drinks container that comes with 2 different tops (One for cold and one for hot) Nice piece of kit though. I also got someone else to get me a waterproof map of the local area that fits into my back pocket. Yes I would love someone to buy me some really expensive bling kit, but theres so much to go at for us beginners. I've no lights, pump, spare tube ......

Any thoughts on what you'd like your friends and family to get for you?

I ride with my lights on in daylight.

so do I, I also ride my motorbike with the lights on as I can't turn them off, and the car with sidelights (well many cars are now being made with very bright daytime running lights)

The problem with riding without lights during the day is that other vehicles may have them on and these draw the eye of others around you...making you a bit invisible as a cyclist.

I do also, not so much the front one as I believe the white can blend in with the sun if behind you, but definately always ride with the rear flashing light.

As for a pump, I have a Co2 one, cost about £6 from wiggle and then about £3 on 2 cartridges from Evans.

This may be worth considering too

Goes in my 2nd bottle cage on the tube that the seat goes in.

Holds the bike multi tool, spare inner tube, a gas cartridge, co2 pump adapater, valve converter incase have co2 issue then a car/garage can help, and 2 tyre levers. Looks much neater than a saddle pack, and safer than having it in the back of a jacket,

I am getting lights from my brother and some merino socks from mum as part of my pressure . I have bought myself countless things too in the name of Christmas

I personally think the world is going "lights" mad. Before everybody had lights running 24/7 everybody was as visible as each other (car wise anyway, motorbikes and cyclists are an exception as they need extra help*). My car doesn't have daytime running lights, but I sometimes feel I have to put my dipped headlights on at 2pm because of all the lights around me; saying that I rarely do it though, I typically wait until conditions require it, i.e. visibility is low!

*I don't use my bike lights in the daylight. I've stood behind my bike with them on/flashing and they really don't stand out.

For Christmas I will be getting more cycling clothes I think. I only have two days worth which means lots of washing and hoping they drip dry fast enough for the next morning!

Forget all that pump and lights nonsense, top of your list should be one of these:
