Welcome to CC, webbyst!

I personally haven't experienced a sore backside, but a lot of folk here swear by this:

And make sure you have good shorts with sufficient padding.

You will find, though, that with time, your sit bones will get used to the saddle and riding will be more pleasurable.

You just need to get the miles in.

Invest in a good quality saddle; you will thank yourself over and over again. As to what constitutes a good quality saddle is one of the most keenly debated subjects on this forum.

I am a bit of a traditionalist I have a Brooks saddle (B17) for longer rides, a Selle San Marco ‘Rolls’ on the road bike and a Terry Liberator on the Hybrid all are comfortable for me, what is best for you depends in what kind of riding you do, your shape and what leaves you able to walk when you get off.

Hello © User3143
And welcome to the site...

If you haven't cycled for a while, then your botty is going to take a while to adjust to sitting on a saddle.... give it a few rides and it will get used to it.

And as OP's have said, may be worth investing on a new saddle as the one one your 'budget' bike might not be that great.

.....or go out on an organised ride and ask for advice. There may be any number of reasons for botty soreness. And, if you're in south London, consider asking Ian (above) who, as you see, runs the Bromley cyclists group, or Pollards Hill Cycling, or the SW London DA Beginners section if there is a ride near you, which will travel at your kind of speed.

Welcome -As a newbie myself since last year I got regular soreness but slowly got used to my saddle and use a gel saddle cover for longer rides. Interesting for me is that a proper warm up before i go out helps me.

As the others say, seek advice when you see other riders, i am forever asking other riders for info when I can or go and have a chat at your LBS as their are many types you can choose from.
