I am a newbie to mountain biking and i am looking for recommendations for decent trousers and jacket.

do people think waterproof is the way to go? What makes are good? what is the difference between trousers and over-trousers? which is best?

as for jacket's is windproof ok? or would waterproof be better? i am looking for something breathable if possible. any ideas?

cheers.

IMO Unless you spend good money, waterproof = sweaty. I prefer a windproof softshell but do sometimes use waterproof overtrousers (shorts or 3/4 length) to save the wet a**e. Mud +MTB sorta go together. For most conditions i wear Endura humvee shorts & 3/4.
Go for comfort, all year round practicality/use and buy according to the conditions you'll cycle in. If you're not in a muddy area and aren't out in the rain then waterproof would be a uncomfortable waste of money. Do you use a rear mudguard? I don't as it gets in the way but if you do then regular 3/4 should suffice unless you do cycle in adverse conditions. Think about usage, check out your LBS and ask others you meet on your favourite trails. Happy pedallin'.
