I'm being lazy cos i guess i need to get out and just look my bike over but...

Got dropped off at work in car... bike in back. New Dolan Mythos. Have ridden it maybe 4 times and am getting used to it... love it.
Anyhow as i set off i realised i couldn't shift from small cog on front to big cog. I've got Shimano 105's. No problem last few rides. I stopped and adjusted gear and ended up tightening it up a wee bit. Tried again and this time it would shift but wouldnt catch. Didnt want to overtighten it so left it and cycled home on smaller cog and just used gears at back.

So... could i have knowcked it and it just needs tightening further or is it maybe cos i've knowcked derailleur.

I can go back to LBS next week but i have a tri on sunday and want to try and just fix whatever it is i've done. It has to be something simple cos i cycled home from work last week and placed bike on bike hooks and all i've done since is load it in and out of boot. So i feel i must have just knocked something.

Please help with any advice. I intend to do simple bike maintanance course but in meantime you're my lifeline....

I'm not sure from your description what the problem is.

Start off by checking that the front mech is straight (In line with the chainrings) and the cable is still firmly connected to the front mech.

Then add a bit more tension to the cable.
New cables stretch and often need adjusting after the first few rides. The easiest way is to keep turning the barrel adjusters.

If you can't get the adjusters to move far enough then you will need to re-connect the cable.
- Wind all the barrell adjuster all the way in
- change to the smallest cog
- Undo the cable and re-connect taking out most of the slack.
- Wind the barrell adjusters out to take out the remaining slack.

There is the possiblity that as you had the bike in the back of the car it may of knocked the front mech out of adjustment, or worse, bent it. See the above post to get the info on adjustment.

Hubby just looked at it on turbo and managed to get it to shift onto big cog but now it won't click back down! Will have to leave work asap tom and get to shop i bought it from. Need it sorting for my tri on sunday. Thanks for help.
Im really upset about it now. Its going to be hard work getting to shop before 4.30 and it closes at 5.30 - i just hope they sort it. They said to bring it in if any probs so ......... is that the norm when you get a new bike... teething problems kinda thing?

Give them a call and explain about the gears and about your timings. I would expect they will be accomodating.

If need be, pull all the female wiles [he said, about to get into very hot water]

'scuse me for butting in; I had problems for ages with not being able to get onto the big cog at the front more often than not on my old bike until I was told to ease off on the pressure on the pedals during the change and it worked! no more problems.

Lol .... i will certainly try all of those Scoosh. Shimano - i have ridden the bike 4 or so times since buying it two weeks ago. Have clocked up probably 50 miles and had no probs getting to big cog. Until today! Just wouldn't shift - as though gears were not working. Hubby tweaked gears and it went up but now black clicker on the shimano 'thing' just moves to the right with no responce. I will have get to bike shop. Formby cycles in southport. Thye were good when i got it and said first service free in 6 weeks but to bring back anytime in meantime if there are issues. I think im more worried about whether they will just sort it as they said to just call in ... but it does take time to get sevred there. Its quite a drive so i will ring first. I have a closer bike shop literally just down road but i'm loathed to pay when its two weeks old.

Loved those Smileys scoosh or cry..ies i should say.

Ahhh sorry Scoosh. Was a bit slefish there and didn't check back in once bike was fixed.
Tri went really well knocking two mins off best ever time. Was pleased that the mins came off my run as it meant it wasn't just cos i'd got new bike. However, was surprised my bike wasn't faster. Was maybe 30 seconds faster than 2 years ago (Don't ask about last year - as i had a mare!)
Bike is riding well. Have got used to gears now and sort of to the seat (ouch!) so next step is SPD's. Any recomendations???
