This seems like a friendly little forum so I have chosen you lovely folk to see if you can assist me.

I bought a mountain bike about 18 months ago and have enjoyed doing some off roading on it. This summer we did a bike ride for charity (160 miles over 3 days) and I picked up the bug of cycling on the road and longer distances. I am therefore now looking to purchase a road bike.....

I have looked in local shops and they are all very nice but I am trying to find a 2nd hand bargain to get me going again. The problem is I know nothing about bikes.....

Has anyone got any advice on the following spec that is listed locally as a 2nd hand bike? Are the parts any good? What price would you put on it? I believe the bike is a couple of years old and the size suits me, spec is as follows:

  • 7005 alu frame
  • adrenalin carbon forks
  • shimano ultegra sti levers
  • shimano 105 chainset brakes front and rear mech
  • mavic helium wheels
  • new bontrager tyres
  • selle italia ox seat
  • fsr seat post
  • 3ttt handlebars
  • coppi stem.
Any opinions or advice would be superb.

Thanks in advance

Hi/Welcome
I like 'ultegra sti' and '105 equipment'. Don't know much about the other stuff you listed, tbh. What bike is it?

Mavic Helium were the predecessors to the Kysrium range. They will be 4-5 yrs old and were very good quality when they were made. As Maz has already commented the Ultegra / 105 implies a reasonable quality of equipment. It will probably not be up to date, but you can get replacement bits as needed.

In summary, this was probably once a high end bike. But, do not let yourself pay over the odds for this bike. Have a look at what you can buy new from Ribble for £500. The seller will still imagine his bike is cutting edge and will possibly try to market it as such.
