Hi everyone,

In an effort to clear his garage my brother has just offered me an old hybrid bike (Marin Sausalito I believe). The indexed gears on this have never worked satifactorily, despite hours of fiddling with the adjustments and many trips to the bike shop only a few of the available ratios have ever worked without slipping/clattering horribly. My own experience of indexed gear bikes (admittedly all of the supermarket variety) has always been similar so doubt if I have either the patience or budget to rectify the problem properly. In all other respects this bike is probably way superior to anything I can afford at the moment so would love to be able to get some miles out of it.

I have a theory it should be possible to replace the existing handlebar mounted shifters with some old frame mounted shifters of the non-indexed kind that I remember on racing bikes as a teenager more than 20 years ago - presumably the indexing mechanism is in the shifters and I just need to set up accurately after finding new shifters that provide the correct amount of cable movement. I realise its a step backwards in terms of technology but since I´m accustomed to it, I´d probably prefer this setup anyway.

It will be a couple of weeks before I have a chance to see the bike and judge for myself if this is going to work. In the meantime I discovered this forum and figured it the perfect place to seek help - any advice you guys can offer would be appreciated, even if only to break the news that my idea is a hairbrained waste of time..

Many thank in advance,

give it all a clean and an oil first surely whatever you do, it might only be the cable sticking

any decent LBS has to be able to sort that out

I'm sure replacement of some parts might solve the problems if indeed it requires that, could be something very basic and easy to resolve. Hard to know without more info/pictures

Cleanup/lube goes without saying for anything for anything thats been in the tender hands of my brother;) My reluctance to spend much time/money trying to rectify the existing problem stems partly from the fact that from memory, this bike was bought from a well known shop (near London Bridge) and went back under warranty/complaint at least a couple of times, then already taken elsewhere for 2º/3º opinions. In the past both my dad & I who are both fairly competent mechanics have had a crack at sorting it too.

Will ask if any pics or tech info available, but unlikely until I get there myself.

Thanks already for the quick replies, is encouraging to have a 2nd opinion that its a bike worth having...

I do wonder why the bike wasn't replaced under warranty if it presented with so many problems?

Indexed gears shouldn't be a big issue but it seems like something has been at fault from the start. Let us know how you get on- worth taking the bike as you may be able to salvage any useful components etc if the bike is not all useable.

Downtube shifters are unlikely to work on a modern frame. They don't have the bosses that the shifters would work on.

Like everyone else, I think you should visit a decent shop. It could be that the hanger the rear mech sits on is slightly bent, or the rear mech, or just bad setup. But a good shop could tell you, and probably quite quickly.

Very likely the rear hanger is out of true. If the chain is slipping or jumping on some sprockets check that there are no rivets on the chain standing proud. This often causes jumping.

You can get band-on downtube shifters. For example:

http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/product-...On-Gear-Levers-for-28.6-mm-Down-Tube-4821.htm

No bosses needed, they just clamp round the tube.

But I agree, it's worth a good overhaul and a visit to a good mechanic first, in case it's just a set up problem, or something that can be fixed with a new mech or something.

I´ll book into the bike shop for tech help before I think about trying anything else. Sounds like something that should have been noticed earlier has always been missed..

Thanks for all the feedback folks! Will let you know how I get on..
