I have been meaning to join a forum to help me understand a bit more about bikes. A good reason now.. I had a jolt on my bike after running over a wedge shaped piece of wood which was an real shock! . After I felt a noticeable bump when I'm riding. (Front wheel).

I was running the tyre at about 110-120 psi when it happened. There is a very dull click or tick when the wheel goes round. It looks like I've got a bit of movement side to side. Is this enough to need to true up quickly or can I ride it for another few days?

It is moving side to side by about 3-4mm is this bad?

Thanks for your help people :bicycle:

3-4 mm ,,id true it up (if u can ),dull tick??elaborate please, poss hub needs looked at

It depends on whether its moving because the wheel is not true or because you've bent the rim. You can ride a wheel that much out of true for a few days no problem. If its a bent rim then presumably your brakes will not be working properly in which case you should get it straightened out.

The tick happens when i spin it and listen to the hub when the bike is upside down.. Will I cause more damage riding it.. maybe try letting the pressure down to give it less jarring? what dya think.. can the cartridge be replaced.. How much is sensible to spend on a hub for a cheap rim? any recommendations... cheers guys

no dont let the air pressure down ,you sure the wheel isnt rubbing on anything when u spin it (brake blocks ?)all the spokes intact?usually if a hub was damaged it would grind or something ,cartridge ??eh???a sealed bearing you mean ?most cheap hubs are just loose ball bearings

its an alexrim factory wheel that came with my specialzied sirrus sport.. cant be more than £50 worth. No not rubbing. feels like it's bumping a bit when i ride. hard to tell though. the pressure went down to 90 after a few days riding and the knock..

If the noise is definitely coming from the hub you may have damaged the bearing cups with the jolt of slightly flattened a ball bearing. This will need checking soon before permanent damage is done. If the noise is from the rim then it will be okay for a while. Is there any damage you can see on the rim? The rim would be the obvious place for any damage to appear and is usually repairable imo.

Just check it isn't the following which can all cause a tick sound: the nut on the valve stem is slightly loose. The speedometer sensor is working as it should. There is no reflector or similar attached to the spokes and a bit loose.
