Hi, I used to be a marathon runner now struggling with groin/hip injuries - awaiting confirmation of a suspected labral tear in hip which will likely require keyhole surgery. Been out of running for 15 months now. Anytime i run the pain soon becomes worse to the point that i have to stop.
However,Over past several months I found that i could use an exercise bike to maintain fitness and this didn't seem to worsen my injury.
Got me thinking - used to love cycling as a teenager(now 34) and enjoyed the cycling in the olympics so why not get back to the real thing??
Borrowed a friends hybrid bike and loved going out on it - did 25 quite hilly miles in about 3 1/2 hours couple days ago. Whats more, it doesnt seem to excarbate my hip injury - the pain/discomfort seems to stay on a level.
If I can't get back to long distance running well i would like to try long distance cycling. My main aim would be to join a local cycling club and go out on a weekly sportive, as well as decent-distance cycling by myself. I seem to like an endurance element as per marathon running, and find some of the principles re food supply and training similar. I have one eye on a charity 200 miles-over-2-days in June 2013 (9 months away!) and possibly a couple of 50 milers in the Spring of 2013 to help prepare me for the 200 mile maracycle. Researching on the web i think a road bike is the type of bike for my purposes??
I'd appreciate any advice, and in particular any recommendations for a brand/model of road bike that might suit my purposes. Unfortunately money IS an object for me!
