Others will advise you better, but I think the consensus of opinion is don't buy a cheap bike, but then you dont need to buy expensive either, but at the end of the day its down to your budget.

and :welcome:

I'm not the one to ask as I sold my road bike in favour of hybrids lol. But for £300 the smart money seems to be on Decathlon's B'Twin Triban 3, if you can still get one in the right size. Alternatively if you are open to the world of flat handlebars, this is a nice frame and looks better in the flesh http://www.jejamescycles.co.uk/giant-escape-3-item171390.html and this also looks rather nice and is light enough for roading it about but also could be taken on the path http://www.evanscycles.com/products/jamis/allegro-comp-2012-hybrid-bike-ec031350

Do look into your nearby independent bike shops... most of them are dealers for three or four main brands so perhaps limiting, but a lot of them are very helpful and you might discover your own sense of brand loyalty this way.

hi nigel cheers m8 ever heard of viking tre valle?
The Viking name is quite old, though I believe the modern company has no connection, I might be wrong. A cousin bought it for me four years ago to ride to london, thats where the pic was taken, it was all we could get at short notice with mud guards. Got it the day I set off, bit of a steep learning curve the gears were, last road bike before it had down tube shifters.
