Newbie after 30 years - Which bicycle brand

Hi I have decided to return to cycling after 30 years. Basically to get fit and to explore t he countryside more. I am looking at a Marin San Rafael DS1 or 2, Merida Crossway 10-v or Merida Speeder S1 and a Claud Butler explorer 400. The staff at the local bike shop have suggested that the Marin bikes are better ride. I was wondering what other people thought and wondering what other brands I should be looking at. I am looking at hybrids for about £400. Thanks!

Giant, specialized, trek worth a look. Also boardman from halfords just forget front suspension unless off roading or riding on pretty rough tracks
