Bought myself a new work stand from Decathlon

They had the £39 one and the £59 one, nearly went for the cheap one but noticed the display models metal locking wheel had sheared in half! Bet they won't sell many of those with that on display.

I went for the £59 one as it looked more solid as all metal tubes etc but time will tell if it lasts. I put it together tonight and contrary to what the box claims, it took longer than ten minutes and I did need a spanner but it went together ok.

Any one else have experience of using one of these models? Hoping it will save my back as bending down all the time is starting to hurt a bit!

I have one, its pretty good with one desin fault... or maybe user error.

The clamp that holds onto the seat post needs to be set wide so you can get the seatpost into it, then the lever that toggles the clamp open and closed cant move the clamp enough to grip it tightly, so you end up having to hold the bike in with one hand, and adjusting the clamp with the other before you can close the clamp.

But other than that its good.

And yes, it did take longer than 10 mins to build.

Does it have to hold the seat post? I think mine is supposed to work on the seat post or the top tube and it has the same issues.

I use it on the top tube for most little stuff and it's relatively easy to lift the bike into place and drop it onto the bottom jaw then it supports its own weight whilst you nip up the clamp.

Yes I noticed that when playing with it in the shop, but like Norm I think I prefer clamping the top tube instead, for some reason I don't like the idea of clamping the seat post. Only trouble will be cables getting the way of the jaws, suppose I could just rest it on and not clamp it down maybe.

I wouldnt want to clamp the top tube of either the Secteur ot tricross, as they are both shaped and not "just a tube". It would be very easy to damage the paint. I would rather have a seatpost scratched. (obviously, unless it was carbon which neather of mine are)

The stand I've got has a lot of rubber in the jaws, I would have to work very hard and clumsily to damage the paint on either the Secteur or the Tricross, or any of the other bikes I use in it.

As any mechanic will tell you, you shouldn't really be clamping your bike by anything but the seat post anyway. It's not as big an issue in aluminium as in carbon but the tubes are necessarily thinner in the middle than at the ends. When you clamp in the middle of the top tube or seat post, you are clamping an area of the bike that is not designed to be clamped (or designed to hold the weight of the bike). THe seat post sounds counter intuitive but even carbon posts are designed to be clamped and they're also designed to hold the weight of the rider. Naturally you don't want to over tighten the clamp anyway but it's definitely good practice - have a look in a few LBS's, they all put the bikes up by the seatpost (in doing so you're not getting the rear brake cable clamped down either).
