Hi there,

I have just take delivery of a new hand built wheelset with Miche Primato hubs.

There is a strange sound coming from the rear hub, whereby when coasting the freewheel emits a "pulsing" or "oscillating" sound. If I had to describe it, I would say it sound like a "waaa, waaa, waaa," type sound.

This sound was there out of the box and even 30 miles in it persists.
Is this normal for new hubs or for the Miches?

By the way, I don't know if this is related, but the the rear wheel is not perfectly true radially (i.e. up and down, rather than side to side) by a few millemetres, so the rear wheel bops up and down a bit when I spin it.

The (reputable) wheelbuilder says that all this is normal and within tolerance.
I can live with the radial movement, but the rear hub noise is now getting annoying.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks!

It's the tyres. When they bed in, it will dissipate.

Hi and thanks for your reply.

This happens without the tyre as well.
The more I look at it, the more I think the radial trueness is to blame; they've got s. 2-3mm of hop when spinning slowly.

Is that acceptable radially?

I wouldn't be happy with that radial run out on the rim and I would not call it acceptable especially when you are aware of it when your riding.......take them back and ask them to sort it if they cant I would ask them to replace the rim...:cuppa:

Thanks for your replies.

I have no tools to accurately measure trueness; the 2-3mm is by eye by placing a plastic card (or similar) across the rim and spinning it.

I'll take it to my LBS to take a look.
The wheelbuilder is saying that it's within tolerance.

To be fair to him, the front wheel is fine, the rear wheel is fine laterally and the spoke tension is even for each side individually (tested by ear).
However, I just can't get over the radial wobble and for a brand new £350 wheelset it's annoying.

A big thank you to my LBS that trued the rear wheel for me.
His best guess is that the rim itself is not true.

Consequently there are two spokes that are slightly under tensioned than the rest, but still within tolerance.
A bit annoying having to true wheels after having them build but at least I got there in the end.

If the rim is not true from the original build its still down to the builder he used a rim that was not true in the first place....Oops..you shouldn't haven't had to take it to someone else to correct it an pay, go back to the builder and get a new rim, you've paid for it on the original build it should be right....:cuppa:
