I have just purchased a new set of tubular rims and have put an Ultegra cassete on the rear and am running a 105 groupset for the rest. When I tested it however, the chain was jumping and sounded very rough. I have just started and have little mechanical knowhow. Help!

I take it this is a new cassette and an old chain ?

Likely that the chain has stretched and isn't fitting onto the cassette teeth snugly. Have a look here and scroll down to the section on 'Chain & Sprocket Wear' for an explanation.

You'll probably have to buy a new chain (or a new cassette if the cassette is old and the chain's new).

First thing to check is the rear mech alignment with the sprockets......

If it's a different wheel to that of your other, then the cassette won't be in exactly the same position (slight difference in manufacturers), so you'll need to adjust the adjuster barrel on the rear mech to bring the jockey wheels in line with the sprocket - it will be a mm or so out.

Had that when changing from my training wheels, to some nice racing wheels - different make, took about 1 turn to adjust. Once you remember that, it's then a doddle swapping wheels.

thanks

Thank you all for your posts. I think you are correct fossyant, as both my chain and cassete are new and it was sitting in the cassete teeth a little out of line, although they are both Shimano( ultegra and 105) so i assume they are the same spec. I also thought it could be that one is 9 speed and the other 10 speed but 105 and ultegra are both 10 speed. I will give it a go and let you know. Cheers all once again.
