New wheels worth the upgrade?

Currently i have mavic cxp22 rims with formula sealed bearing hubs that came with my bike and i am looking to upgrade. I got a price from a guy who builds wheels of £155 for ambrosio evolution rims with 105 hubs and steel spokes 36 at back and 32 at front. Being so cheap would this be worth upgrading and would there be a noticeable difference?

TBH, I would say no. However the hand built replacement may be better built and thus more durable. Uprading within the range of ~£50 will result in no real performance gains IMO, except in extreme cases like the Triban 3 with boat anchor wheels where even a £100 set of wheels is a significant upgrade.

If you have ~£100 wheels, as typical for off the peg wheels supplies with bikes in the range of £1000-1500, then you would be best looking to spend about £300 on wheels for a "proper" upgrade.

I asked on the forum before and people recommended mavic open pros with 105 hubs and when i said to the builder about that combo he suggested the ambrosio saying they are just as good and cheaper! I would just like something a bit more race worthy without breaking the bank (dont we all!)

Because I am feeling lazy right now (and I bet lots of other people are just as lazy), please help me (us), to help you. Tell me, the weight of your current wheels (preferably without tyre, tube and skewer else I can not compare to factory specs), the depth of the rim, how many spokes per wheel, what tyre you like to use, what sort of riding you will be using them for, any particular issues you are experiencing or have experienced which is to your dissatisfaction. Thanks.

I know the rims are 510g with 32 spokes per wheel. Not sure of the total weight with hubs but they are heavy wheels! Rim depth is 22mm as ar as i can see in google (not in the house to measure) i am using gatorskin at the moment but will change to gp 4000s when better weather comes. I just want a wheel that will be better for racing with.
