I have a 2009 Trek 1.2 that I have been using for commuting for the last 4 years. This year I am going to upgrade the whole groupset as it has done about 5000 miles. I will also be doing the wheels as the rims are starting to look in need of replacement.

I am looking for a good quality set of wheels that won't turn to pringles over the rubbish road surfaces of Nottinghamshire. They will need to be Shimano fit and 9 speed compatible. I am 14.5 stone so they support a fair bit of weight and I ride about 400-500 miles a month all year round.

I have a Madone for weekend and fast rides so am not too worried about anything too sporty as all my really quick riding is done on this.

Any suggestions most welcome.

How much do you want to spend?

Is the reason for upgrading the groupset because you have done 5000 miles? Seems an odd reason.

Rob,

The chain snapped on me last week and I need to replace the cassette to stop it slipping. The bike has been ridden hard through the winters too with'normal' home maintenance. I fancy replacing the old Sora with the new 3500 as a treat to a lovely and comfortable frame really. The cassette and chain rings definitely need replacing any way.

Fair enough if you want to upgrade. Although replacing one low end groupset with another is a waste of money IMHO.

The bike is used throughout the year as a commuter. The Sora group has been fine IMHO so a 'low end' replacement seems sensible to me with all the crud that it has to take day in, dayout. Also the original post is about replacement wheels. As the chain snapped last week and I need to replace the cassette and the chain set there is general wear on the components. The choice to replace the groupset is mine. It is not about extracting more performance from the bike but personal choice.
