so finally managed to try my new wheels in my bike and have had to spend about 2 hours reindexing the gears.

should i have to do that?

gone from bontrager race to mavic cosmic so i appreciate theres a difference but still using an 11-28 cassette, so wouldnt have expected to do all that?

even had the jovkey wheels rubbing on the cassette

have I done summat wrong or is that normal?

The freewheel hub won't always be in exactly the same position with respect to the derailleur, although it shouldn't be all that far out.

Remember to ensure the derailleur end stops are set up so the derailleur stops directly under the biggest and the smallest sprocket of the cassette. Set you're rear gear shifter to it's highest gear setting, then you can tension the cable with the derailleur sitting underneath the smallest sprocket (it's natural resting position when there is no cable tension) , if this is done correctly then the only adjustment needed may be a small twist on the cable tension screw on the back of the derailleur, you may not need to adjust anything.

Ooh.... I can see Mr Derailleur making a short, sudden visit to Spokey town if this isn't right. I am not criticising the OP here but they don't sound too sure about what they are doing, and the price of geting it wrong is high. Might be worth asking an LBS/someone to check it over and make sure it's all good?

no offence taken ^_^

I do know what I'm doing, hence why I was surprised I had to re-index after just swapping wheels.

The H and L screws are set fine, and the B screw is now, and a quick ride on friday seemed to confirm all is in order, I was just really surprised that I had to do any of that.

If it isnt right when I go out tomorrow morning though my first call will be the LBS (which is all of half a mile away)

You didn't mention the shift cable endstop and/or barrel adjusters - you did adjust that, didn't you?

nope they'r mavic cosmics, came with a shimano hub and ultegra 10 speed cassette

I diddnt word my reply accuratly.

It should have been...

"Are the shimano hubs?

Dont forget that they may need the spacer if you are using a 10 speed cassette on a 8/9/10 speed hub."

As they are shimano hubs, they will need the spacer. Was the cassette fitted when you brought them? Did it have any side to side play?

fitted in the shop, no play its all nicely fitted, and it seems to work too, I was just surprised it needed that sort of adjustment

2 hours - did you have a nap in the middle ?

I have to re-index if I use a particular set of wheels - it's literally 4 clicks on the adjuster - takes seconds.

PS a 28 cassette and Cosmics don't add up

If you know what you are doing I am surprised that you are surprised! Seriously, maybe you should get it checked to avoid any shocks£££££££

It might be as simple as a sticky cable but 2hrs sounds a bit like groping around in the dark (non intended )
