Hi all,

To cut a long story short on Sunday I was taking part in a charity cycyle ride when half way round a spoke snapped on the rear wheel. I have had this wheel fixed twice before and is the standard wheel that came with my hybrid. I now need to find a replacement but not sure what to look for as there is no model numbers on the wheel.

My bike is a Giant CRS4 2009 Model with 700x35 Schwalbe Marathon Plus Tyres and I think it has a screw on freewheel / cassette as well but am not 100% sure.

The figures in the photo are the size of the rim 622 x 20. A 2009 Giant would NOT have a screw-on freewheel, but an ordinary cassette. Any ordinary wheel would do, but if you are snapping spokes regularly, you might want something quite 'robust' (a 'touring' wheel) with 36 spokes. (Are you on the 'heavy' side perhaps?) You would not need a new cassette, just swap over the one you have.

You have a standard dia sized road wheel but it's a bit wider to cope with wider tyres.

The options are ( assuming you have a freehub):

1. Simply replace all the spokes with better quality DT spokes and nipples( downside - it's sometimes the hub that is causing the problems and it's probably a cheap hub that will soon go anyway).

2. Buy a new wheel off the shelf - you need a 622x 20 or 700x20 (same thing) shimano compatible wheel.(downside - no guarantee of quality hub and spokes).

3. get the LBS to build a rear wheel with Shimano hub and DT spokes.

I was maybe also looking at going for a more narrow tyre so would it be best to buy a set of wheels which can take a smaller road tyre for my hybrid

Oops my bad! Sorry, and I should check before posting!, I had presumed that a relatively modern bike like yours would have a freehub....

So as its a screw on type I am still unsure if to just get a matching wheel like the one that has broke or to replace the front and back and go thinner on the tyres

Rosebikes do some nice handbuilt wheelsets at very good prices. You can pick from a huge choice of hub/rim combos and they have a 10year guarantee. You could go down to a 32 on the same size rim. Depends how small you wanted to go. Another rim size down you could go thinner still.

Maybe a good chance to upgrade to a cassette instead of the freewheel? You can pick a 7 speed cassette up very cheaply online.

But (& I am not sure, so don't take this as gospel, see my clueless post above!) Would not the OP have to change his shifter(s) to account for different spacings on the freehub cassette?

Hi all
Many thanks for the advice but as I am a newbie still I am still not sure what best option is for me. I don't have a massive budget.

Shouldnt need to change shifters, just re-index rear mech.

If its low budget you can pick a rear wheel up on amazon for under £20. They wont be the best but itll see you over until you re ready to change.
