new tyres?

Bought a giant defy 4 in may and so far have done about 1300 miles on it.
The tyres(giant s-r4) 25s have a few nicks in them but because they are slick, hard really to tell the condition of them.
My question is when do i think about replacing them and what tyres to replace them with?

Slick? Worn or treadless. If its the latter thats no reason to change a tire the less tread the more of your tire is in contact with the road so they are more Grippy. There's a lot more to it than just mileage but I'd expect to get a lot further out of a tire and I'd run them still I started getting more p'tures than usual. As to what to replace them with there a plethora of tires out there (and you'll get a plethora of answers) it depends what you are wanting, weight/grip/rolling/p'ture protection/wear/cost. Conti GP4000s are the best I've had when it comes to grip/roll and its reported that Marathon + are best for p'ture protection (although heavy). I've found Mitchelin Krylion Carbons (now Pro 4 Endurance) are the best all rounders for me.

I replace mine when they puncture more than usual as HLab says, but you also need to watch out for when the centre of the tyre squares off. After about 2000/3000 miles I find the centre of the rear tyre gets noticeably flatter and less rounded and eventually it leads to skittish grip in damp corners.

As above (I'm just posting to bring some consensus) I swap my tyres when there is noticeable flattening of the centre of the tyre,or after suffering some significant damage or unusually frequent flat tyres.
