New training technique - ever been shot at before?

So there I am, minding my own business, steady pace up a 1 mile climb that constitutes the majority of the rides round here, when the lane passes a field to the left, gently falling away into the valley, with a steep wooded section to my right.

From corner of my eye spot 4 guys line abreast in the field as I pass gate. At same moment, voices and much thrashing in woods to my right and a group of pheasants fly straight up, about six feet from me. Split second later, several bloody loud bangs from my left hand side.

Blimey, I have never accelerated so quickly on a 16% section before:biggrin:

Yup...when a dirty great big dog from a farm (climbing up a hill) decided he didn't like us...never done 30 mph on a 42x19 before...don't want to try it again......

It's a bit like that in the Languedoc when the hunters are on the trail of a sanglier (wild boar). My father in law has been shot at, we have had hunting dogs accompany us twice - they wear a bell and it can seem like a high speed cow running alongside! Men in orange caps sitting by the roadside cradling rifles is a bit wierd for a naive brit on a bike...

Think I would've jumped into the nearest ditch! Most annoying thing we have to deal with are farm dogs. been chased by packs of those a few times, the smaller they are the worse! Although we've met a few Dobermans etc that have given us a real fright.

Rode past a farm once and a few metres on heard a clatter on the road behind me. Look over my shoulder to see a massive german shepherd closing in fast. Not a gun but the effect was the same.

I've been shot at as a beater when the gun lost track of where the line was and went for a fox running towards it. We weren't expecting to have a load of shot falling around us!
I also got shot at by kids with BB guns last summer whilst climbing a hill...seems a lycra clad cyclist constitutes a bit of target practice - 2 small bruises on my arse and side! Not much you can do when you're already out of the saddle, but I told the local PCSO the next day who knew exactly who they were. A week later they gave an 8 year old stitches to the face so clearly nothing was done.

I was shot at by three kids with air rifles when I was in my teens, clipped my T Shirt. I yelled at them, two ran away and one defied me but they didn't shoot at me again. For a short while I had an air rifle myself in my late teens but I got rid of it, everyone hates you when you have one of those!

I thought there was some sort of law about firing across a road, just shows the power you have in those legs though!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Keith, this is West Somerset, laws like that tend to be "forgotten"!

Re power in my legs, did same climb/route today, sans gunpowder inducement, and it was definitely slower and harder work.;)

They are rather careful round Nexon area and always post someone in high-vis on the road.

I did get nipped by a hunting dog and complained to the owner when I found him. He was clearly embarrassed and apologised profusely.
