Hi everyone!

Sorry for the very basic question! Forgive me. I recently bought a commuter bike to cycle to work.
(From a friend) I had a bike fit but noticed that my peddle crank does not fit flush to the bottom bracket.

(Image attached)

Hoe do I fix this? Would I need to buy a new bottom bracket?

Cheers for any help in advance.

That is normal, you have a cartridge bottom bracket assembly. The pedal arm is fitted on the end by a bolt pulling onto a tapered spindle

This is mine, the same

As above, you have a spindled BB. Square taper or splined are very common, and the cranks do stand proud of the frame on them.

Thanks for the reply, so is there a way to get the pedal arm closer to the frame?

The only other option is to convert to threaded external bottom bracket and fit a new crankset to match. Very expensive for something that isnt faulty. Its just designed that way- very reliable design, cheap to service/repair

Again thanks for the replies. Appreciate it. Can you buy a smaller spindle (width)? Or is it more hassle than it's worth.

Or change it out altogether including pedals etc?

There are different designs of spindles, but they fit their own cranks, for example square taper won’t work with splined and vice versa. If you really wanted the cranks closer to the frame, you’d need a threaded cup external BB, and a crankset to match, which won’t be cheap.

Don't worry about it, just ride your bike :okay:
(Clean the muck out from time to time of course)

The reason it sits out like that is so the crankarm and your foot don't hit the chainstay whilst pedalling. It doesn't need changing or altering.

Quite right. Look at the sweep of the crank past the chain stays. It will be close enough as it is, if you bring it in board any more, the cranks / your foot won’t clear the stays.

Also, since bottom brackets are usually symmetrical, fitting a shorter one will mess up the chainline on the right.

Just ride it. In fact, ride it for 100 miles, then retighten the crankbolt, remove it, clean the threads and refit the crankbolt with threadlock (the only tool you need for this isan 8mm allen key). Then never touch the crankbolts again until the bottom bracket bearing wears out.
