New to cycling - Btwin Triban 5 help

Hi, I bought my first road bike a Triban 5 and I've read a few posts about gearing and trimming and I'm completely confused. How do I know If I'm in the right gear? Today, I was cycling in the 2nd gear and had the cassette gears 2nd from the top and it was really noisy, so dropped it down. I read a bit about cross gearing but now don't know when this is happening. Really need some help here!

It is difficult to provide a comprehensive answer.
I suggest you read an article like this one.

You can see some very goo youtube videos as well.

As the Tribans are all triples, you will find using the biggest cog at the front and the biggest two/three at the rear will cause a rub as the chain catches on the derailleur because it is at an angle which is extreme compared to a compact.

I generally use the big cog on front with 4 to 8 at rear, middle cog with 4 to 2 and little cog with 3 to 1.

Always try and keep your chain running fairly straight and parralel to the frame, and you won't go far wrong.
Youtube cross chaining and all will become clear

Thanks all for your help. Now having problems with clipless pedals. Can't seem to clip out wards by turning my ankle. I've got Btwin clip pedals using delta cleats. I've tried adjusting the cleats on the shoe but still have problems clipping out. Any advice please?

Have you adjusted the tension on the pedal? There should be a hex nut which you turn anticlockwise to reduce tension?

Good idea to change the tension...I set it to the minimum for the first couple of months

Using your gears can be hard to learn but easy once you have got the knack..
I found you could leave the rear cassette on the 4th biggest cog and just use your front cogs to change up and down as a bit of practice, it makes things a bit easier.

A couple of pics may help as some cleats have built in float which allows some side to side movement whilst still being securely clipped in.

Cant help much on the Delta clipless as I use Shimano gear, but you could try going to a LBS and see what they say they are always ready to help with advice?

sorry no help on your problems here but from what i have heard Btwin wheels aren't very good and replacing the ball bearings in them with high grade harder ones does prolong there life
so maybe worth a consideration?
Cheers Ed
