Hi everyone.

New to Cyclocross, was thinking of these wheels as a starter: Rigida DP18 rims Shimano hubs, £145.

Any others out there? Quite like the deeper rims in hope they will help in sticky mud situations. Not looking to spend loads of money just now (wife wants a holiday  )

Advice welcomed.

I've used Mavic Aksiums for 3 seasons now and they are still true and running smoothly. Definitely recommend them. Another good alternative are the Planet X A57 wheels, which only cost £125: http://www.planet-x-warehouse.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_Road_Alloy_279.html

IMO, the A57's are a bit biz. Light but not very hard wearing.

Got some A57s but they're spares so don't get a great deal of use. I put them on the cross bike if I ever want to use it on road (winter or the odd sportive). Never used them for cross. Do you reckon they'd have a breakdown if I used 'em for racing then?

hang on......

<places large bag of 'New York Cheddar with Herbs' on scales and climbs up on to counterbalance>

.....ummmmm

......nope

Best stick with Aksiums then.

How much does it cost to Oldham?
I had a comedy moment last year at the stadt moers' cross race. Forgot how to ride my bike up a kerb, completely misjudged it and ended up putting my knee clean through the front wheel- split rim the lot. Not supposed to happen in my book. That was after the back wheel lasted about five months.

Had to ride the race on someone elses' front wheel with the brakes not adjusted for the rim. That was fun!

Did you also ride the race with a kneecap missing?

Once, whilst installing some disk brakes on my MTB I failed to listen to the voices and attempted to fiddle with the pads whilst the wheel was spinning. Cue trip to A&E with tip of index finger missing.

Always listen to the voices

Unless those voices tell you to take up cyclocross for a hobby.

I've run two pairs of Kysrium elites for a few years and never the slightest kink.

Bought a cheap new bike from Wiggle and the front wheel was unrideable after one race.
