Posted by mistake in beginners section but no facility to delete? So will try again here:

I have just replaced the Shimano Sora groupset (except brakes) on my Specialized Tricross with new Tiagra stuff. I have fitted it all as per the instruction leaflets and all is fine except for one thing. The operation of the gear change levers (for both going up and down the chain rings) for the front derailleur (also new, Tiagra) seems very stiff and takes a lot more effort to operate compared to the old Sora changer.

Could this be just because it is new?? I am trying to remember if the Sora shifter was stiff when new and I think it was (a bit, anyway). Or have I somehow messed up the installation somewhere? All cables are new, but I reused the old cable outers as they were the correct sizes.

I would remove the cables and check operation of the FD and the shifter when unconnected. I would also check the route of the cables paying particular attention to under the BB. I think it might be well to change the outer cables also using the old cable outers for sizing.

Don't know whether it will help but I don't recall my Sora shifters being stiff when I first got my bike.
Will leave the technical stuff to others to help. Good luck

Disconnect the cable at the mech and see where the stiffness is
- is it very stiff to move the mech by hand ?
- if you pull the cable taut by hand, is it very stiff to operate the shifter ?
- if you operate the inner lever (i.e. move shifter to the inner ring position) then you should be able to open the shifter lever by pulling the brake on and if you push the cable back up the outer it should poke the nipple/plum/bell (whatever you want to call it !) out of the side of the shifter

Errrr; apart from routing the tensioner cable to the right side of the securing nut instead of where it should go, to the left. Which means that it wasn't getting proper leverage on the mech :blush: :blush:.

Thanks for the replies and sorry to have wasted peoples time; but all sorted now :smile:.

Unfortunately the road test will need to wait until my ribs have recovered from injury after a recent off, but they're taking their own sweet time. Pity there's no adjuster screw for them..... :sad:
