New specs
I am due my two yearly eye test in a month or so, does any one know of any frames that are suitable for normal use and for cyling (I tried inserts a few years ago and did not like them and though I like contact lense they are too much of a faff to put in and out)

I am sure there will be further recommendations on this thread but in the meantime I was referred to Optilabs who originally set themselves up as lens suppliers trade only but now do retail and frames too. They are not exactly local to you (!) but I think they are used to this, mail order etc. My dilemma with glasses was that I need varifocals to see potholes, roadsigns and A-Z index (font 3 normally!) but also polarised for the sunshine. The glasses (specs) I first used were great but the really important element that I completely forgot about is the wind in my eyes when going fast down hill (which makes my eyes water and really mucks up my vision!)

Optilabs was recommended to me by my local bike shop Corridori

My opticians were not sport specialist enough - they did find Addidas glasses and a few other brands but couldnt provide combined varifocals and polarised lenses. The ones I chose have just been made so I havent tested them yet. They will definitely do a better job than the first pair I had though.

Hope that helps!

I to wear varifocals, when my prescription changes I get my old pair tinted, £12 at Specsavers, full UV protection. Don't of course look like traditional cycling shades but do the job

I was lucky to find a local optician who set himself up as a specialist in sports eyewear; he glazed a difficult pair of Rudy Project frames for me, which are quite wraparound. Did 'em with varifocal lenses too. The lenses are pretty thick at the outside edges but the thickness is disguised by the thick frame. He was prepared to go where most high street opticians aren't prepared to go; the result is an excellent pair of streamlined sports specs that I use for skiing and cycling. Sadly the bloke has gone to live in Canada.

For dull weather riding specs I got locked into the local repair network - in every town there are technicians who the opticians give their repairs to when they've failed to persuade the customer to buy a new pair. These blokes can fix anything. By asking around you'll find them, mine was in a filthy shop in a backstreet in Bolton and the man is a genius. I picked out a Benetton frame that was lying in a heap and he got it glazed for me in clear plastic for £50. Not varifocal but who cares.

I know the problem isnt really varifocal related but Essilor do this class lens called the varilux sport. It's like a vari but has a mega wide distance field of view and is designed with cyclists in mind. It's worth looking into next time you change your varis if you want a pair just for cycling or sport or whatever.
I order my sports specs through an English company called hilco they have frames with prescription inserts and changeable colour adaptors and the like. They're pretty cheap...for what they are.

As an aside, I am surprised that no-one picked up on montanawills little quip, about suggesting some lenses that were worth looking into!

Well, it made me laugh anyway....

This won't exactly help the discussion, but I have just bought a set of cycle glasses with inserts off ebay for about £22 (including 3 sets of interchangeable lenses) and then got the nice man at the local Vision Express to put single vision lenses into them. Even though the prescription is pretty strong (both eyes about +6 point something) they were able to do them and I am very pleased with the results. Lenses were pricey though at about £140 but they needed to use extra density material to keep the lenses thinner for the inserts.
