Noob alert. I have just finished replacing the cassette and bearings on a Claud Butler Voyager. On the cassette side the bearing face felt a bit odd - almost like it had a split in it. I could not see in but could feel it with my finger. The wheel runs smoothly most of the time but gives the occasional clunk. Is this symptomatic of a broken hub?

The wheel is quite old and replacing the hub is probably not worth it but I would welcome advice. Also where might I get a good deal on a rear wheel? The ones that I have seen all seem around the £80 mark.

Cheers.

if the 'clunk' is not regular it's perfectly possible that one of the old ball bearings dropped into the axle housing during dismantling. As the wheel turns it'll get to a tight spot every so often, hence the clunk.

Take the whole thing apart and give it a good inspection. As well as what RB said, look for any pitting on the bearing surfaces. If the hub is pitted it will need replacing. If just the cones are pitted you can replace them.

If it is a Shimano rear hub then pitted drive side cone, bearings and cup are all usually replaceable. The latter is by replacing the freehub as the drive side cup though not available separately it comes with a freehub.
