I've just bought some Topeak Defender mudguards for my Cube, which I don't think look bad as mudguards go. If you've never come across this style of mudguard for MTBs before, the front one has a bracket with a "plug" that slides up inside the fork steerer tube and expands to secure it (which I think it really clever). There are then 2 mudguards that clip onto the bracket. One is positioned under the downtube, and the other is a short one that goes forward over the top of the wheel, and presumably blocks the "fountain" of water and dirt coming off the front wheel.
Before I put the small one on, the front of the bike looks like this. (You can see the grey bracket already in place.)
When I clip the mudguard on, the cable for the fork remote lockout sits on top of it, which is fine, but the brake cable (hose?) isn't long enough to go round it, and is pushed to the side, like this.
It the brakes were mechanical, I wouldn't worry about it, but I'm not sure if it's OK with hydraulic brakes. I can leave it off, if not, and just use the back one and the one under the downtube, which are the ones that give most of the protection.
(There's plenty of room for the forks to use their full range of travel without hitting the bracket, by the way. It said to make sure of that in the fitting instructions.)
