Do folk change their mech's and shifters every so often? I've done about 10k on my sora ones and have some spares available....

If it ain't broke...

10k isn't much in the scheme of things.

Sora might be ok but i found 2300 rear mechs lasted about 3 years of continual use before the rivet holding the arm to the body spread enough to affect rear shifting a bit .

Well I am having fine shifting problems
Have you replaced the gear cables and outers? thats normally the 1st thing that can affect your shifting, i generally change the rear once a year (ish) as the commuter gets all weathers so the cables can gunk up.
With therar mech you can feel an excessive amount of play and see a gap between the jockey cage and the main body is how loose i was talking about.

Look at your jockey wheels as well.

As others have said, mechs generally last for many years without issues. But jockey wheels do wear out, especially over the winter months. Equally, they can get really mucky pretty quickly with a build up of oil, mud etc., so do benefit from a good clean. But if the tooth profile has worn down, replace them - it is a fairly inexpensive spare part.

I am away from my laptop currently, so can't give you the mileage for replacement that I get, but I would guess at about 15000km of year round riding?

I couldn't get the gears working properly. LBS fixed them! The problem was a build up of winter grit/salt in the mechs. The chap spent 10 mins spraying, wiping, moving, cleaning and they slowly started behaving. Went for a ride this morning and they were as good as they've ever been.
