New Front Mech (Claris)

Had to purchase a new front mech today.

Does anyone know what this little plastic thing is?

My suspicion is it is just a transit piece to keep mech from damage but would rather be safe than sorry if anyone can advise.

It’s a piece from the packaging.

looks like a curtain hook, it certainly not part of a mech

New parts usually come with fitting instructions in the box (including the removal of transit pieces)

I think that is a wedge that holds the cage in the outer position, so you can adjust the height relative to the large ring without the cable attached. The fitting instructions should explain.

Good thinking @the snail I think there a similar post not long ago I’d forgotten about and this was the conclusion.
It holds the mech in the outward position above the big chairing so you can set the above it. This should be 1-2mm or you can use a screwdriver blade.

Thanks all, the holding it out to position over big ring had crossed my mind.

Unfortunately the fitting instructions were very poor, something akin to an East German flat pack wardrobe 😀

I've never seen one in the packaging but if there was one it sounds like I threw it away thinking it was just part of the packaging. Worth keeping I'd have thought for future fettling. I use a nylon zip tie to achieve the same result but they take a bit of fiddling 😒

Cheers all, just fitted mech and indeed it was very useful for holding the plate out in order to position above the outer ring.

Will cable it up tomorrow (thanks for pdf @Ajax Bay )
