I have bought a new Sram X7 MTB front mech but cant get it working, the cable is fitted but and on the small granny but it will not move to the middle or outer ring. Ive looked at the vids on line, park tools etc and i still cant get it out of the granny ring.
Am i a spaz?

Not entirely sure but, you may need to set it up as-per shimano.

That meant setting up the outer throw (ie big chain ring first) Shimano come with a little plastic spacer that positions the front mech over the outer rings first whilst the cable is connected. Try fixing the mech over the outer ring before connecting the cable

For me this is really counter intuitive, but seems to work for shimano, like I said Sram may operate the same way.

I ride campag and the operation is really logical.

Not sure I've helped....someone with more knowledge may know.

With my X7 I set it up on the granny ring first as it defaults that way.

It's a silly one but ................

The mech has two holes in which you can put the bolt which clamps the cable.
As I'm pulling the cable from below the mech, I'm clamping the cable on the left of the pivot.
If your pulling from above the mech, you'll need to clamp on the right.
So check your useing the right clamping point.

Luck .........

It did have a white spacer in, didnt know what it was so pulled it out!!!

What now?

The spacer is only to allow you to set the height of the FD so as to clear the large ring (1-3mm clearance) and has nothing to do with the cable. The cable is connected with the chain on the smallest ring and the largest rear sprocket so that it just clears the inner face of the FD.
Are you sure that you are connecting the cable the correct way i.e. for a top pull or bottom pull der?

Connection is in the right way for pull down. Still can get the mech to get out of the little ring>

Question on the X7 shifter, when it says 1 on the shifter, is that for the big ring or little ring?

Im having a mental block with it all now!! Driving me mad!

Worst case scenario, LBS or is there anyone who can help me in the gloucester area!!!

Take the cable off the mech.
If you push the cage over with your finger, does it move ??
Now work the shifter, does the cable move ??
Now match up the movement of the cage with the movement of the cable.
As yours is a downpull position, when the shifter is set so that the cable is at its longest then where you bolt the cable to the mech will be at its highest point and visa versa.
