For those that live in the area.
There are a couple of new cycle facilities in Solihull. They are on Hampton Lane, where the pedestrian bollards are in the middle of the road, the ones nearest the bypass. This section of road is 40mph, the facility starts with a cycle lane marked on the road, it cannot be more than 1m wide. Around 2m before the bollards the lines take you to the left onto a shared pavement, so you need to move left to create a good angle to the pavement (the surface will degrade with time), into the traffic approaching from behind The added bonus is that the trafffic cannot move right, as there is a bollard there! (This could be designed to cause accidents, thereby reducing the No of cyclists?) You then arrive at a give way 20m on. Alternatively you stay on the road, don't cause the accident and let the traffic pass further up, saving time in the process.
