New chain, need new chain ring?

Getting a new chain and cassette. Bike mechanic said my front chainrings are OK and the chain shouldnt slip or anything. However my larger chainring is noticably worn and my concern is how this will affect the wear rate on a new chain. Unfortunately they didnt have the chainrings I need in stock, and they would have cost a considerable amount. So am I better off changing the chainrings next time or change it asap? Assuming the chain doesnt slip in which case I will have no choice.

If chain does not slip then leave as it is, if it slips you will have no choice.

You probably have a Shimano/FAS/SRAM chainring - they look as though they have been round the world twice when they are new as the filing and chipping helps changing gear etc etc. The smaller chainrings don't need this so they look normal.

If the chainring is worn enough to slip, it will have sharp pointed teeth in the area 90° round from the crank arm.
As 4F said, if it does slip, you've no choice - the progression from "slips when you stomp really hard" to "slips whenever you go uphill" is fairly quick. Slip is most likely when you sprint away from stationary/very slow, like at a junction or lights, so take care with traffic until you've tested it.
