Recently bought new 10-speed chain, 10 speed cassette and jockey wheels for road bike. It's all fitted but the shifting is awful. I've tried adusting it but it its hesitant and sticky.

Could be:

Mavic chain mixed with Campag cassette?
Chain too long, cassette goes to 29T so I didn't feel the need to shorten chain?

Any ideas.

The first thing to sort out is the chain length. Best method (imho) use the sheldon brown method to get the correct chain length. (google chain length sheldon brown).

Not sure this will sort the problem but will eliminate one suspect.

Also check the condition of the cable and the cable guide under the frame. Clean and lube if necessary.

No doubt someone will comment on compatibity of components.

What size was the old cassette ?

If that was also 29t, then your new chain needs to be same length as the old one (i.e. the same number of links - don't just lay side-by-side on floor and make same length, as the old one may well have 'stretched' ['worn' to be accurate] a little)

once you are in you chosen gear, does the chain continue to skip off the cassette?

if so, then can you not adjust the gear cable as the rear derailleur may be out of aligntment.

I'd be surprised if the different brands of chain and cassette were the cause .

what type of connector does the chain have? If a pin then check there is not a tight link.

if a connector, then check it is fitted correctly and is pointing the correct way.

Mmmm, did you originally have a campag cassette? Are you using campag shifters? If yes then most likely then cables - clean lube or replace them.

I've tried the Sheldon Brown method which meant taking a full link out of the chain and jiggled with the cable a bit ( which seems fine) so I'll see how it goes.

It didn't skip before so I don't think it's the chainring. Rear mech doesn't look out of true. Doesn't skip when in gear just doesn't like changing.

The cassette is bigger than the one it replaced.

I'll see how it performs if it ever stops raining.

Thanks for all suggestions

I'd have said the first thing to do is confirm that the chain is fitted correctly. A badly installed chain (with a tight link or badly inserted pin/quick link) will certainly cause jumps in the lower ranges - until it fails and throws you on the floor that is......

Have you adjusted the B screw? If the cassette is bigger as you describe the top jockey wheel will be closer to each gear cog if not touching, this will cause the chain to not drop off the tooth smoothly, almost like chain suck on the front. So adjust the B screw a little, small screw at the back on the mech so it drops a mm or so away from the cassette.

Sorry, fatal mistake, change the lot. Only true way to avoid problems I'm afraid.
