Congrats on your new hobby, it won't be long before you will discover you need more bikes and stuff  This thing get addictive very quickly!

While cycling is the perfect tool to create the caloric deficit required to burn fat and loose weight, sustained effort also creates hunger for which you tend to overcompensate if you are eating the wrong foods. Loosing weight is simple but not easy, as everyone keeps saying, requires a certain amount of discipline and determination.

Don't know if you like reading about this stuff but after buying many books I have settled on this one as it's aimed at beginners, very easy to read and follow. Basically it gives you riding plans to loose weight and increase fitness, very good guidance on what and when to eat as well as strength training you can do at home with minimum equipment. Also available for iPads and Kindle. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ride-Your-Way-Lean-Ultimate/dp/1605294063

I didn't think I'd get the bug either.

Now if I had less self-control I'd have a fleet of bikes by now (that the wife refers to as "bicycles" managing to say in such a condescending way....), spend money I don't have on various accessories and bits and pieces, drool over the latest bikes etc...

Oh, wait....

On another note though - three weeks to wait for your bike once you have ordered it is just plain cruel!

Oh yes....it's an addiction alright!

My other hobbies (collecting bread-bag ties and stick polishing) are now firmly on the back boiler.

I've always likked bikes........but there are special dolphins that take over your brain, apparently, when you start riding a road bike in Ernest.

It's also very easy to become bling obsessed and a sucker for red, shiny things to bolt on to your red shiny thing! Be Moderate, keep calm and enjoy!

Welcome!

Diet isn't rocket science really, just eat proper food, cut out the junk food, less alcohol etc. Pasta and rice are both good. I'm partial to spaghetti bolognese, curries, pasta bakes, pizza, so you don't need to go on any specific fancy diet IMO.

To lose weight, don't eat any more than you do now (a little less if you can) and exercise more. Cycling is ideal exercise  I know what you mean about gyms, seem very boring to me.

I am however spending money on a new wardrobe of cycling clothes. I always thought I'd never be seen dead in skin-tight lycra, but now I wouldn't wear anything else on the road bike. Half my other clothes don't fit properly any more either  so that's more expense coming up too.

Good job I didn't start cycling to save money

So as PBB said three weeks to wait for the bike was kinda cruel so got it.......today actually 4h28 minutes ago and just done my first 6.4 miles in what I think is very respectable 21m22s. how do i feel? well got off the bike and my legs buckled, my A*** feels like the pineapple is still up there!! and my blood pressure quite simply was the best it has been for weeks again a very respectable 115/79 pulse 103, I'm very pleased, when will I go again? as soon as the pineapple has been removed!!

Wouldn't wear lycra, wouldn't get shoes and pedals that attach, wouldn't consider riding 100 miles. All promises to myself (and my wife) i've broken since starting riding, i'm currently on the safe as houses (for now) "i promise i'll never wear a replica kit".
