I'm buying a bike on the cycle to work scheme, but need advice on the model of bike ie cannondale trek etc.
I will be using the bike for leisure purposes ie canal/river towpaths, delamere forest and some road riding.
Been to evanscycles and the sales assistant said the norco nitro 6.3 is of a very good spec.

thanks for any advice you can give me

Thats a preyty big budget for a first bike ( I assume it is) can you provide a little more details of how you wish to ride.

The canals wont need any rear suspension, but at the price you mention you are getting up into short travel full susser country, which may be relevant to the forest trails you mention (are they a single track type ride or just pathway/firebreak routes)

do you want a 29er specifically...it seems the nitro is? and what do you really want to spend?

Thanks for the reply jonny jeez.
My budget is around the £850 mark. I dont want a 29er, the norco nitro has a 26in wheel. But i'm open to any ideas to any make of bike.
I will be riding for leisure rather than competition and mainly around my local area (pathway type of rides and maybe tougher rides when i get more experience and stamina.)

Ok so you must be looking at the nitro 6, is that right? (I beleive thats the 26 inch version) sits at around £570.00

I'm not a norco expert so I apologise if I'm wrong.

What (other than the salesman) draws you to the norco, if its a brand you know and trust then you should perhaps stick with it, if its totally new to you then another brand worth considering could be the;

Cube Ltd ( comes with a remote lockout on the shox) a decent frame and good components (including deore groupset)

a couple of chaps on here ride them and swear by them

Sorry I'm not going to be much help as I just dont know the brand...and therefore the quality/abiblity of the frame. The frame is the most important bit as its the only bit you cant feasibly change.

What I can say is that I'm seeing "tapered" forks which is a plus a good groupset (the X5 is Srams equivalent to shimanos Deore) and a few other bits that suggest its supplied with decent components.

But that doesn't answer your question really as you want to know if the brand/frame is any good.

Perhaps post again in the dedicated MTB page ;

and you'll get a lot more feedback (no-one comes here:sad:)

pretty bike though.

(Shaun, any chance we can move this to MTB for wheelman?)

Hello
Just had a look at your link to the GT and imho its a lot of money for a heavy bike with mediocre components
FWIW if I had £900 to spend on a bike that would be pretty light, pretty fast on the road, very fast off road, decent frame, forks and components etc I would be buying a Boardman CX Team.. list £899
I would shy away from bikes with big knobbly tyres and suspension unless you plan some serious rough stuff, they sap the energy you put in and are very slow on roads/cyclepaths etc
If you really think a mountain bike is for you then the Norco is better equipped than the GT
