Need to replace 105 5700 Gear Cable

Do I need to remove the bar tape - I can see the housing with the small hole in it under the tape when I roll the rubber hood back.

The existing cable/housing is new but when the cable was fitted it was cut too short and frayed so I want to replace it.
 
With a little judicious fiddling you should usually be able to fettle a new cable in without removing tape

Do not cut the cable first.
You should be able to thread the cable through no problems.
When threaded and fitted - then cut to length.

If you cut first it will unravel as you thread it.
Do not ask me how I know this.

If the outer is fine (which it seems it is), then you can run a new cable in through the old outer fine, but if you want to change the outer, then just take the bar tape off, you will thank yourself when you have the job complete in 10-15 mins rather than 3 hours!

Depend how the person who fitted it set up the outer cable as it meets the lever.

You need to set the gears to the lowest (smallest cog) pull back the rubbers covers and the there is a hole at the bottom, and threaded it through there, pretty sure if memory serves me right there is a service cover that un-screws so you can see better what is going on. I found a really thin allen key on the multi tool helped me get it to go in to the outer.

Having now done a complete new cabling job, I would probably just un wrap the bar tape down past the lever to do the job, makes it a lot less of a faff on the 5700.

Thanks everyone - took me less than 10 minutes. The bar tape was not obscuring the outer cable fortunately. Hardest part was threading the cable into the little hole in the lever assembly due to slowly declining eyesight (56).
