A few days ago I started to hear a slight 'rattle' coming from the back end somewhere but couldnt find where. I thought the bike probably just needs a good clean and lube and did this when I got home. Today on my way to work the rattle was more frequent and I thought my rear mech needed a slight adjustment so I done that.... Still the same!

On my way home my chain started slipping so I now think its got something to do with the cassette/or and bearings??

Have temp put my wifes rear wheel on so I can still use it for work so the question is:

If I put my wheel in for repair how much is it going to cost! I have an Edinburgh coop LBS not far away so was thinking of putting it in there.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Try and move the axle - does it?
dose the cassette move? and what speed is it?

Yes the sprocket does look very uneven on a lot of sides. The bike is 10years old plus but was only used occasionally up untill 3 months ago when I started to commute and have now clocked up 600 mile

If all the transmission is that old it could perhaps be partly the rear mech return spring losing tension.? also worth checking every link in the chain to make sure every link is loose and floppy. A link could have seized with rust which would cause the chain to ride up on the sprockets particularly the smallest ones.

took wheel in to edinburgh coop today and told them to change cassette, check the bearings and true the wheel. Will cost 10-15 quid! Sounds good value to me. I will also change my chain and rear gear mech so that should resolve things

the wheel truing may only cost £15.00 but I shouldn't have thought you'd get a cassette of any kind from a bike shop for that money. Are you sure they quoted you for a new cassette ?
