My wife and I are looking for some help in choosing our first bikes in 20 years.
Our aim is to get fitter/lose weight and we will be using the bike mainly on roads/bike paths, with some riding on forest trails.
I have back issues so I would need something more upright and comfortable.

I went to 4 bike shops, the first 2 suggested a mountain bike, the last two suggested a hybrid.

Budget is around £500
These were the bikes we liked most:

Trek 7200

Cube LTD CLS Pro
http://www.cube-bikes.de/xist4c/web/..._id_36158_.htm
(Cant find any reviews for this)
It was suggested that I add an adjustable handlebar extension and suspension post to it.

The other choice would be a mountain bike
Specialized Hardrock Pro Disc 2010

Any help would be appreciated
Thanks

I don't think that you will need shocks and disc brakes as they add a lot of unnecessary weight if you are sticking mainly to roads.

The Specialized Sirrus is worth a look

I think the cube or the Trek would be good.A mountainbike with suspension and knobbly tyres is harder to ride on roads.

Theres a lot to be said for buying the bike available in the closest bike shop to your home, especially if its within cycling distance.

Thanks for the replies, not sure about the shock side. I know they add weight but Im not exactly slim  I thought it would make the bike more comfortable to ride and give more options if we decide to do more off road in the future.

We are trying some more tomorrow.
