Hello,

Totally new to this biking world, did a lot when i was young, but now i need a bike as short journeys in my car are causing more damage and cost than its worth.

I'm looking for a strong well made bike for commuting each day to work (2miles), so i assume a rigid mountain bike would be adequate. Budget of up to £500. I am 6"4 and weigh 135kg. If there is any bikes or sites that could be thrown in my direction would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

This any good? http://www.evanscycles.com/products/trek/4300-2009-mountain-bike-ec016488

not taking the piss fella but for two miles just about anything that suits you will be fine

any hybrid over £300 will be lovely, more money will make it lighter/nicer/faster/more reliable

Totally agree with Tynan, for £300 for example you could get a Subway 2 from Halfords or from Evans a Specialized or Kona or Dawes Hybrid etc.. And with your £500 budget, you will be then able to get lights, shoes, SPD's, clothing, lock, pump etc.. Looking at the bike you have highlighted.. ask yourself, do you really need suspension forks, if you are just travelling on the road, surely no need.

I recon for 2 miles you would be better off with a brisk walk or a light jog. It would only take a few minutes to do the 2 miles so not really enough time cycling to get any fitness benefit out of it, Thats what I recon anyway, im probably wrong, im sure someone will be along in a minute to say otherwise.

you could still buy the bike though and do some longer runs at the w/e. Or go to work via a longer route.

The two mile can always be made longer... and my heart is usually beating faster by the time I've gone about 500 m (its uphill and I always seem to try and do it quickly).

check if your employer has/will do the cycle to work scheme. if it has/will, you can save a fair bit.

I did look at it, but for the amount i earn i do not save a great deal and also my company are not easily approachable for such things. Thanks though

Fro two miles I'd be tempted by the £50 rigid MTB on offer at my local JD sports. It doesn't look too bad at all.

Oil the chain regularly, ride it carefully and I reckon it'd be an ideal mount for a 2 mile commute.

Focus bikes on www.wiggle.co.uk seem good value and there are some bargains from 2008 range. There were some large frames left the other day so you could maybe pick up a bargain B)
