I think I saw this on BBC Breakfast last year. I put it in a blog this weekend but think I might have to edit it out. I've spent a frustrating evening trying to find this stat either on the Beeb site or through google but no avail.

It makes me wonder if it was a gaff on live telly?

The best links I could find were these:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2009/oct/25/obesity-rights-discrimination-nhs-cost
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-388001/Shouldnt-tax-fatties.html (numbers are hidden in the text)

It would be interesting to know the average cost of obese, and morbidly obese treatments are on the NHS and whether they do contribute enough in taxes through VAT, Income Tax, etc...?

I'm not sure how reliable any such stats would be, or where you would go with info. NHS treatments are supposed to be based on clinical need, not on how much tax someone has paid. It sounds a bit like an attempt to stigmatise overweight people as undeserving. I think the costs incurred due to obesity are pretty large, but probably better to highlight the benefits of encouraging healthier lifestyles, or to do something about the junk food industry, and getting more people onto bikes of course.

Dunno but it's a sticky wicket going that way. For instance I think the government gets around 10bill from tobacco taxes but if everyone stopped smoking tomorrow it would save the NHS 2bill. There's probably a similiar stat for VAT on certain food.

Besides I don't mind paying for their choices if they don't mind paying for mine.
